BURAZĀZU—The Hirano Brothers

BURAZĀZU—The Hirano Brothers is a new documentary of sorts that focuses on the story of Ayumu and Kaishu Hirano, an enigmatic brother duo currently turning heads in what can sometimes feel like a slightly stale halfpipe scene. Ayumu is, of course, the most-podiumed rider of the year (fingers crossed I did my math right here) and a favorite heading into the upcoming Olympics, while his brother Kaishu carries a more subtle podium record but makes up for it with sheer amplitude and the kind of crowd favoritism reserved for riders whose style outweighs spin count.

To be completely honest, when I first saw the marketing for this video, I was hoping it would be more of a straight-up video-part situation. And to be fair, there is some incredible slow-motion halfpipe footage here that absolutely counts as clips. But this is more of a straightforward documentary. Not that that’s a problem. It’s just that imagining a full video part from these two, stacked entirely with unseen footage, feels heavenly. That would be insane. I digress.

The film catalogs their upbringing with a father who worked tirelessly to build a local skatepark during the Hirano brothers’ youth. It features interviews with their father Hidenori, their brother and former professional snowboarder Eiju, and traces the timeline of how these Japanese icons came to be.

There are some great cameos throughout and quite possibly the best halfpipe footage we’ve seen in longer than I can remember. Definitely worth a watch.
